The redesigned special route, The Doges’ Hidden Treasures, offers a richer visual and narrative experience, enhancing the fascination of places of major historical memory that are rarely seen by the public. The route is unusual and at times panoramic, enriched by objects selected from the collections and storage facilities of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. The objects and spaces become the protagonists of the story and are returned to public view. The visit is conducted by a specialist guide.
A funerary stele created in 1829 by Francesco Bosa, featuring a winged genius and a female figure, introduces visitors to the myth of Venice in a nostalgic atmosphere. Three 19th-century marble busts by the same artist portray Bellini, Bembo and Bragadin, major figures of Venetian culture.
The antechamber, furnished with antique cabinets, features an 18th-century bust of Doge Bartolomeo Gradenigo by Antonio Gai. A narrow hidden staircase leads to a small guard room displaying Renaissance armour associated with the Contarini family and shields decorated with Medusa and the Lion of St. Mark.
The central room reflects its contents in its design: a barrel vault and wooden panelling studded with metal bosses frame austere iron strongboxes with complex locking systems. The central display contains gems, precious objects and ceremonial glasses, while the lower section presents objects connected with the election of the doge.
